Adding Galleries in Shaken Grid

Posted in: Tips,Walkthrough

Apr 21

Introduced in version 1.6 of Shaken Grid, the Gallery post format allows you to upload multiple images to one post and display them in a slideshow on the frontpage of your website. On the post’s individual page, the images will be displayed in a grid and can be viewed larger in a lightbox upon click. Check out the video walkthrough for a quick demonstration of the new gallery post format.

Additional Options

You can choose to hide the slideshow on the frontpage. If this option is chosen, your post’s featured image will display instead. When the “Enlarge” button is clicked for that particular post, all gallery images will be included in the lightbox that appears and you will be able to scroll through them.

Also introduced in version 1.6 is the new “Minimalistic” post template. By selecting this option the sidebar of the post’s individual page will be replaced with the post’s title and content. This takes away any clutter caused by the normal sidebar and places a focus on the post content…we think it’s pretty hot.

Does the free version of ShakenGrid have “light-box”-like pop ups, or is that offered in only the paid version?

Is version 1.6 the same as the paid version, or is it yet another version? (Couldn’t find a download button).

    Thank you.

The free version also includes the lightbox (check out the demo). 1.6.2 is the latest version of Shaken Grid Premium and can be purchased here: http://www.themegarden.com/sawyer-hollenshead/shaken-grid/

        Hi,

I’ve actually already downloaded the free version, but can’t get the lightbox to work. When I click on the thumbnail, the larger version of the photo appears in just another browser window. Could you please let me know how to get the lightbox to work? Should it have been automatic or did I need to set it up?

Thx. I love this theme’s design.

In other words, on my WP admin panel, I do not have a “Format” option on the right side of the panel. I have only “Publish” and “Categories”.
When I opened “screen options” at the top of the admin panel, I didn’t see a “Format” menu either.

    • Sawyer May 4, 2011 at 7:28 pm #

      Hey Helen,

The post formats are only available with the Premium theme.

  3. Helen May 4, 2011 at 7:31 pm #

Thx Sawyer. But Is there a way to get the lightbox working on the free version without using Formats?

    • Sawyer May 4, 2011 at 7:41 pm #

Typically I don’t provide support for free themes (one of the incentives for the commercial themes). You will likely need to edit js/script.js and add the ".gallery a" element to the Colorbox constructor.

  4. Helen May 4, 2011 at 8:01 pm #

Yes, I totally understand your incentives, but if you say, and if your video demo shows, that the basic version supports lightbox, yet my downloaded theme does not appear to support it without my having to go into the codes (as you suggested), then I’m assuming there’s something inherently missing with my download, or that the free version does not automatically have the lightbox feature. Don’t mean to be rude, just confused.

    • Sawyer May 4, 2011 at 8:03 pm #

Hey Helen, it may be easiest if I can visit your website and see what you are describing. Can you provide the URL?

  5. Helen May 4, 2011 at 8:08 pm #

http://www.bloomcreativity.com is my website. But I don’t think that’ll be useful since I’m trying to use the theme for this site’s blog, which I’ve just started, haven’t published yet, and won’t publish til I get everything set up. I really appreciate your time!

    • Sawyer May 4, 2011 at 8:11 pm #

Yeah, it’s difficult to troubleshoot without seeing the problem. If you are setting your images as featured images, the lightbox *should* work. This video is for Shaken Grid Premium.

  6. Helen May 4, 2011 at 8:15 pm #

Thanks for your help :) I’ll look more into it.

  7. Helen May 4, 2011 at 8:32 pm #

Fyi, figured it out. As you had said, photos need to be set as featured images for lightbox to work. Otherwise, they’ll just pop up in another browser window. THx.

Can you tell me what mix of “Pumped Up Kicks” you’re using as the soundtrack on this video? I love it and it’s been driving me crazy trying to find it!

  9. Karen May 22, 2011 at 10:44 am #

    Hi Sawyer,

I am planning to purchase one of your theme. I am wondering if the gallery function would work with flick photo set rather than have them upload again onto my server.

    Much thank

    • Sawyer May 22, 2011 at 11:44 am #

I don’t believe WordPress’s built-in gallery functionality supports external photos, however you could embed a Flickr slideshow instead if you’d like. There also seems to be a WordPress plugin that you may want to check out that does something similar: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/flickr-gallery/

      • Karen May 23, 2011 at 12:43 am #

Thanks for the plugin! I’ll give it a go.

Hey there, ShakenGrid is an awesome theme. I’m using the free version and I’m having a problem similar to Helen. I’ve set the pictures as ‘featured’ but it does not load.

  11. Päivi Aug 14, 2011 at 6:26 am #

I downloaded the free version for test use (and if the site takes off, I’ll propably update for premium version). I noticed however that there is no possibility to comments?! Is there possibility in premium version?

    • Sawyer Aug 19, 2011 at 7:00 pm #

Correct, the free version doesn’t come with commenting functionality built-in, but the premium version does.

  12. Emilio Sep 4, 2011 at 4:47 am #

I just installed WP (hosted on my own not on WP) and this theme i was trying to figure out how to insert a gallery and found this post. but I dont have the check boxes on the side bar like you have in the video to set type as gallery and where it shows the featured image. are those editing features the paid version only?

  13. Emilio Sep 4, 2011 at 4:50 am #

forgre it i saw those are in the premium version in comments above. good theme gonna have to see if i have an extra 50 lying around

  14. Emilio Sep 5, 2011 at 6:06 pm #

one question before i decide to buy the premium version.

is it possible to have the gallery on the main page NOT scroll. just use a single image. then when opening the single post display all images the way you have it here http://demo.shakenandstirredweb.com/shaken-grid/2011/04/18/a-gallery-post/

though i can see that to some it may point to that post as being a gallery, i find it rather distracting

    • Sawyer Sep 5, 2011 at 9:40 pm #

      Yes, this option is available

  15. Heather Sep 11, 2011 at 7:17 pm #

At about second 12 in your tutorial video you have a Format Box on your Dashboard where you choose gallery. I do not have this box (I’m running WordPress 3.2.1). Do you have any idea why? Thx!

    • Sawyer Sep 11, 2011 at 7:40 pm #

The option isn’t available in our free themes

  16. Heather Sep 11, 2011 at 7:57 pm #

Thx. I love the theme — want to test drive the free one first. Are updates included in the paid version? I saw that 2.0 is on its way.

  17. Heather Sep 11, 2011 at 8:00 pm #

no need to answer last question. saw when i went to the paid theme that updates are included. thx!

  18. Christopher Grant Sep 16, 2011 at 8:04 am #

    2.0 is great! Thanks!

In regards to adding galleries, specifically with vertical images, the image doesn’t fill the frame as does horizontals. Is there a option I need to the custom fields to fix this?

    Thanks!
    Christopher

    • Sawyer Sep 16, 2011 at 5:35 pm #

Since the galleries have fixed dimensions, the images are resized to fit within the boundaries. You would want to edit the dimensions of the CSS in a custom.css file and of the images in includes/loop-gallery.php

  19. Christopher Grant Sep 17, 2011 at 1:45 pm #

Sorry, please check out http://www.dailyphoto.se. On the main index page you’ll see the usual grid and near the top a slideshow with 2 color images. As these images are vertical they show a white border on the left and right side. If they’d been horizontal images it would fill up the space.

    • Sawyer Sep 17, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

Yes, I understand — that’s because the dimensions of the gallery are set to a 3:2 ratio. If you need to change these dimensions, you’ll need to edit the styles in the CSS and of the image dimensions in includes/loop-gallery.php, or have someone make the customizations for you (http://shakenandstirredweb.com/customization).

  20. Christopher Grant Sep 17, 2011 at 1:58 pm #

    Rockin, thanks!

  21. gasendo Nov 9, 2011 at 3:14 am #

    Hi!

Is there any tutorial about changing the default size(default:320, tiny:145, etc) boxes?

or is there anyone who can help to change the default sizes?

    Thanks!

  22. bioaf Nov 12, 2011 at 7:50 am #

    Hi Sawyer,
I’ve just installed your amazing theme (premium, version 2.0)…I was trying to make a gallery post and when I watched this video I noticed that at 0:16 you select “gallery” in the format panel. Well, in my format panel I can see only three options (standard, quote, gallery). Gallery works fine, but I’m also very interested in audio and video options. Do I need to reinstall the theme or wordpress? I’m using wp 3.2.1 (italian translation, but it’s the same when i switch to the englis one). About that, I’ve made an italian translation of your theme, if you need it feel free to send an email.

    Thanks,
    fabio

    • Sawyer Nov 12, 2011 at 2:47 pm #

      Hi Fabio,

Those other formats were removed in a later update since they weren’t implemented in the theme. Would love to share the Italian translation if you’d like to send it to me — hello@shakenandstirredweb.com. Thanks!

      • bioaf Nov 12, 2011 at 4:49 pm #

        Thanks! Just sent.

  23. gasendo Nov 17, 2011 at 11:23 pm #

    Hi!

Just want to know if there’s a way to filter the post’s using the URL?
    A manual filter?

    Thanks!

  24. gasendo Nov 30, 2011 at 9:05 pm #

    Hi!

How come the “short link” icon on post’s don’t do anything. It doesn’t link
    to the full page article.

    Thanks!

    • gasendo Dec 5, 2011 at 10:48 pm #

      Hi,

This one is fixed. I’ve made some changes in my httpd.conf file.

      Thanks!

  25. gasendo Dec 5, 2011 at 10:50 pm #

    Hi!

Hope someone can help me. Suddenly the “Enlarge” button won’t work. I can’t track back anymore of the changes I’ve made. Can someone provide me on where to start in fixing this.

    Really appreciate a response.

    Thanks!

    • gasendo Dec 5, 2011 at 10:59 pm #

      Actually the lightbox isn’t working.
