Broken Vimeo Embeds

Posted in: Plugins,WordPress

A recent change to Vimeo’s API has broken the way WordPress handles the auto-embed of their videos. This isn’t a theme issue and is being addressed by the WordPress team. As a temporary fix, until a WordPress update or a better solution from Vimeo is made available, you can download and install this plugin.

Update: A few users have e-mailed me and said that the Vimeo embeds will only work with links formatted like http://vimeo.com/video_ID_here (without the www. part). As I said above, the plugin is a temporary fix until a WordPress update comes out that addresses this issue.

On a related note, sometimes when I return from a post to my main page all of the vimeo thumbnails show up as the same video (from the post I was just on). Refreshing the page fixes it and breaks the repetition. Any ideas?

Hm, that’s a strange issue. It may be related, although it will take some investigating on our end. Let us look into it. What web browser are you using?

Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly, the thumbnails you’re referring to are the video placeholder images (like this: http://d.pr/vWRU)?

        Hi Sawyer,

I’m using Chrome, and yes its the placeholder images. Let me know if you discover anything!

        Thanks :)

Hey Sawyer, just wondered if you had any more info on the thumbnail issue?

Hey David, no I’m afraid not. I would be really surprised if it’s not fixed in the next release of WordPress (which should be out any day)

            Hi Sawyer,

            Happy New Year!

Just wanted to chase up the repeating vimeo thumbnail issue when users use the browsers back button. The new WP update doesn’t seemed to have fixed it and as it stands it kind of breaks my sites functionality.

            Thanks,

            Dave

I’m having this exact same issue on a private client site. I have many Vimeos as posts on the front page of the Shaken & Stirred premium theme.

I have installed the oembed plug in and still seems to be happening. Would really appreciate some help!

    Thanks,
    Ryan

      Hey Ryan,

Is the problem occurring on posts that you create after you enabled the plugin?
