Introducing Our First Free WordPress Theme, “Shaken Grid”

We’re proud to announce the release of our first free WordPress theme, “Shaken Grid”. This theme is perfect for you if you’re in need of a gallery/portfolio website or if you just want a website with a unique grid layout that not many websites have taken full advantage of yet. “Shaken Grid” uses the jQuery Masonry plugin which “arranges elements vertically then horizontally according to a grid.” The result is a gap-less layout even if you have varying post heights. View the demo for an example.

    Hi!
    Can you help me?
Something wrong on my website, because the images are too big on the main page, and i cant click on it.
    What is the problem?
    Thanks!

  3. Melinda Aug 10, 2010 at 2:27 pm

OK, I found the problem. My blog is not new, so there is no set of the “featured images”. How can I easily switch to the old images to be good? 1500 picture should be the case, I do not want one by one.
    Thanks!

      • Melinda Aug 11, 2010 at 4:59 am

I tried that, but this is not the problem. In the old posts there is no thumbnails at all, so there is nothing to regenerate. :) The image is included in the post. The old wordpress version I think it was not get_thumbnail function.
Currently, only new entries can be used, but the old entries will not work. There is no workaround for this?

        (Sorry for my poor english)

        • Sawyer Aug 11, 2010 at 10:14 am

Unfortunately there’s not much I can do about there not being any thumbnails. It should still display the content of your posts though.

      • Melinda Aug 11, 2010 at 5:07 am

Please check out my website. http://kavalkad.otherside.hu
The first picture is good, because there’s thumbnail, but not in others There are only the content and are in the picture.

        • Michelle Aug 16, 2010 at 8:45 am

Just in case you didn’t get this sorted out, or someone else has a similar problem, it should be possible to edit the theme to use the first image from a post in the absence of a set “thumbnail”. This tutorial is a bit old but still handy http://is.gd/ek3Zs

    Hi
I’m still getting my head round this theme and WordPress 3. I see for your demo page you’ve created 2 portfolio pages, which is pretty much exactly how I want to use this theme!
Trouble is it seems those pages rely on content being created in your blog…

Is there a way to create a Page with the grid system or will it always rely on existing Categories out from the blog page?

    Thanks!

    • Sawyer Aug 11, 2010 at 10:11 am

For now it relies on blog posts for the grid structured pages.

  5. claus Aug 12, 2010 at 8:53 am

    great theme! i´m completely impressed!
if you are having trouble with the colorbox and safari, replace the plug-in with the latest version of colorbox-min.js

  6. Mark Bettenhausen Aug 12, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Great theme brother! I work with some great developers and they were really impressed by what you laid down. I refreshed my site in less than a day and people are responding with great complements. You’re on your way!

    Cheers,

  7. M!ke Aug 13, 2010 at 5:47 pm

    Hello,
How do I make 5 columns out of it instead of 3?

    • Sawyer Aug 13, 2010 at 5:50 pm

      Hey Mike,

The design is fluid width, meaning – 5 columns will be displayed when the browser window is wide enough to fit 5 columns.

  8. M!ke Aug 13, 2010 at 5:56 pm

To let them fit on my screen I need to change the width of the columns. However when I make them narrower there appears a gap between them. Where can I make them narrower without creating a wide gap between them?

  9. M!ke Aug 13, 2010 at 6:40 pm

    .box{
    background:#FFF;
    margin-bottom:10px;
    padding:10px;
    width:180px;

If I change the box width in lets say 180px, the boxes become smaller but there appears a lot of space between them.
    Any idea?

    • M!ke Aug 14, 2010 at 10:52 am

      Already found out myself.
Another question, how do I place an image above the post title ?

      • Sawyer Aug 14, 2010 at 11:20 am

On the admin post page – click Set Featured Image, upload your image, and click Set as Featured Image.

        • M!ke Aug 14, 2010 at 5:58 pm

Thanks Sawyer, This really one of the best themes I’ve seen so far.

  10. Sawyer Aug 14, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Here’s a teaser of the revamped hover state on featured images for the premium theme (still in development):

    • Anisa Aug 18, 2010 at 8:48 am

      Re: premium site

I love that comment comes up when you hover.

I do have a question about the current theme: I don’t get the pop-out on the image (X at upper right corner) did I miss something?

      • Anisa Aug 18, 2010 at 8:54 am

Oh, I figured it out– it’s gotta be a featured image. Got it.

Also, I’m using the WordPress.com Stats plug-in, but it’s not recording anything. Can you suggest another?

        Thanks,
        Anisa

  11. John Moore Williams Aug 14, 2010 at 8:56 pm

A bit of a newb question perhaps, and I haven’t tried to implement any solutions myself yet, but would it be possible to have posts show in variable widths determined by the dimensions of the featured image?

    • Sawyer Aug 14, 2010 at 11:22 pm

It’s possible, but will require quite some customization. A similar feature is being implemented in the premium theme which is currently in development.

  12. adam Aug 15, 2010 at 6:24 pm

hi – thx for the great theme! i’m just wondering how you post multiple images for the posts. i see that you use the featured image for the thumbnail image, but how do i upload more images for the gallery?

    • emilie Aug 16, 2010 at 11:44 am

      hi,
I find this theme really wonderful too, to be seen on smart phones for instance… but I would also need to upload a “gallery” for each post? like Adam… is it possible?

  13. MW Aug 16, 2010 at 12:01 pm

Thank you for creating this theme- it is absolutely awesome. I love the look of it the most, and the fact that it is so easy to use is a bonus.

  14. Karey Aug 16, 2010 at 12:18 pm

    Hi,

Thank you for such a great free theme! I am trying to create a drop down categories menu (as in the demo), and cannot figure out how to do this. Am I overlooking something basic? Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    • Sawyer Aug 19, 2010 at 11:06 am

You can add categories to your menu under Appearance -> Menus. Create a link with a target href of # and then place the categories under that link.

      • Karey Aug 19, 2010 at 3:57 pm

        Thank you!

  15. Lynda Aug 18, 2010 at 1:21 am

I’m loving the theme and look forward to the pro version. Quick question. How do I add comment functionality to the theme?

    • Karey Aug 23, 2010 at 11:42 am

Hi Lynda, I took the comments.php from another theme, modified the styles and it works great for me!

      • Lynda Aug 23, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Great. Can you tell me which one you used? I’d love to use it as well. Thanks!

  16. Steph Aug 18, 2010 at 6:28 am

    Hello,

Me again. For some reason your new update isnt working for my frontpage, I tried several ways. I uploaded your zip file, changed the name so it wouldnt conflict with the original theme, activated it, but nothing. All my posts on frontpage are still showing. My max posts in reading was set on 10. When I changed it to, for example, 2, everything changed to max 2 except for the mainpage. Press Ctrl+F5 like a madman to clear all the cookies etc so it should load every new file… still nothing.
I changed it back to the 1st version again, cause its my portfolio site and I’m looking for a job atm =) and I dont have a test site running online (just test settingchanges offline).

I’m kinda lost here… dunno what I can try else or what the problem can be =(

    • Sawyer Aug 19, 2010 at 11:01 am

      Hi Steph,

Not sure why this would be happening. Try downloading the update again, find the index.php and loop.php files in the new download and replace your old index.php and loop.php with these new ones.

  17. andyrio Aug 19, 2010 at 9:47 am

I like this very much, my question may i use Google Tracking code to put on Stat Tracking?

    • Sawyer Aug 19, 2010 at 11:03 am

      Yes

  18. Lynda Aug 19, 2010 at 8:13 pm

I’ve tried and tried to edit the code so that I could add a logo vs. the text. Is there a step by step way of doing so? thanks

  19. andyrio Aug 20, 2010 at 4:38 am

My question ya, how to make Categories appears on header with sub-category? A bit lost erk..

  20. Berk Aug 20, 2010 at 9:18 am

    Hi, Great theme.
I was wondering how to add a gallery to posts to show other images when you click a thumb on frontpage.
    Thanks!

  21. Jeetu Aug 20, 2010 at 10:33 am

Awesome theme Sawyer. Thank you very much for developing it. Just made my site using this theme. Check it out if you feel like http://ishootpests.com.

    Appreciate your hard work..

    • Sawyer Aug 20, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Thanks Jeetu – I really like the lazy loading you have setup on your website, I may actually implement that in the future.

  22. Jeetu Aug 20, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Yeah, that would be nice. I was actually trying to use infinite scroll but couldn’t get it to work so went with lazy loading. Maybe implement both in the premium theme as infinite scroll is also very popular.

Thanks again for this fantastic theme.

  23. Douwe Aug 20, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Hey I really like your theme!
But I seem to have some problems with it and Safari: sometimes the clicked image minimizes to a small square, instead of filling the screen.

I made a small screenrecording to clearify what I mean: http://www.divshare.com/download/12332509-823

thnx for help on this one!

    • Douwe Aug 23, 2010 at 11:05 am

Hey, I tried to option mentioned by clause above: about replacing the Colourbox plugin, but that didn’t help resolving the issue with Safari for me. Any more ideas?

  24. claus Aug 21, 2010 at 12:32 pm

    hi
is it possible to get adidtional pictures, that i put in the content of an article (after the read more» ) to open in colorbox?

  25. MW Aug 21, 2010 at 2:51 pm

The League Gothic font is not loading for me in the header links, when I first enter the home page (it defaults to Arial). If I refresh, then the links come up in League Gothic as they are supposed to. Any ideas what could be causing this?

    • claus Aug 21, 2010 at 4:58 pm

check the ftp-rights of the font folders. it should be 755.

  26. andyrio Aug 22, 2010 at 3:02 am

In this theme i don’t see comment box on my page..any idea?

  27. sarah Aug 22, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Hey Sawyer, I’ve been working with the featured image tool but can’t seem to add more images. What am I doing wrong? Great theme, cheers.

    Sarah

    • Sawyer Aug 22, 2010 at 3:02 pm

Hi Sarah, WordPress only allows you to have one featured image per post.

  28. sarah Aug 22, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Thanks for getting back so quickly. Perhaps I wasn’t clear. When you click on the featured image, it opens it in a lovely bubble window, and you can scroll through more images as I see in your theme example down the bottom left, there is an arrow with 1-22 for example. How do I do that?

    • Sawyer Aug 22, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Took a quick glance at your setup. The lightbox will only link to other featured images. Hope that helps.

  29. Anna Aug 22, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Nice theme, my questions, this theme don came with comment box aite? It just a profoflio theme, but i like the way you build it..i hope i can use it..

  30. sarah Aug 22, 2010 at 5:52 pm

    Yes it does. Thank you

  31. Brandon Aug 23, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Is there a way to make it when you click the picture a video plays in colorbox?

    • Sawyer Aug 24, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Not built into the theme, but if you are comfortable programming, check out this jQuery lightbox.

      • brandon Aug 25, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Youre so on top of it. Many thanks! Im not a programmer, but im sure i can find someone to help me out.

        Thanks again!

  32. Sathishkumar Aug 24, 2010 at 4:02 pm

There is something wrong with my loop.php. It was working well until yesterday, but from today it is not working. My pagination is coming in the right side of the box, which is supposed to be at the end of the post. Please help me.

    • Sawyer Aug 24, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Hi there. It seems you’ve done quite a few custom things to the theme, which is probably the reasoning behind the issue you were having. It also seems you fixed the problem.

      • Sathishkumar Aug 24, 2010 at 5:58 pm

You are right. I fixed the problem. Thanks for your reply.

  33. Ben Aug 25, 2010 at 7:24 am

    Hi,

Brilliant template, love it and like to use it, but after installing I get a warning in the themes page:

    Broken Themes
“The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.”
And under description it says: Stylesheet is missing.

    Could you help me out?

    • Sawyer Aug 25, 2010 at 11:07 am

Hey Ben, try re-downloading the theme and re-upload it. Make sure that style.css is in the theme folder after you’ve re-uploaded things.

  34. Patrick Smit Aug 25, 2010 at 2:41 pm

    Hey guys,

First of all I would like to thank you for making this theme available. This is just the theme I want to use for my portfolio.
I have two questions about using this theme:

I dont want to give my pictures a title. But still the space remains. How can I change the height of the reserved text, or where in css (the font-size) can i adjust this.

Im not a coder, so sorry for asking this silly question. Ive seen this colorbox js, gallery possibility. How can I implement this in my posts.

Thank you very much for helping me out.
    Greetings Patrick

  35. Ben Aug 25, 2010 at 4:34 pm

OK, that worked. Did it with FTP. Don’t know what went wrong the first time. THX!

  36. Fat Tony69 Aug 25, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Congrats on this Sawyer. I couldn’t believe this was you when I saw it! The same guy I knew on Royalgfx! Congrats with your famous theme!

    • Sawyer Aug 25, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Thanks man, nice to see you’re still around!

  37. kadr Aug 30, 2010 at 2:39 pm

    Hey,

Did someone already found a solution to the problem with the lightbox in Safari as mentioned above by Douwe?

    Thnx!
